Maya Stone

Welcome to the teaching page of Dr. Maya Stone. I’m so glad you’ve decided to visit. I am very happy to have returned to the Nashville Region, a place I have called home for several years. I have had the pleasure of having a variety of different experiences in the teaching field, which I continue to use to inform my teaching. In my studio, I teach bassoon, oboe, clarinet, flute and saxophone. Please see my bio below.

Maya Stone is a champion of music. She has commissioned and premiered several works by American composers, including Paul Osterfield, William J. Lackey, Spencer Lambright,  and Stephen Gorbos. One special project involves solo bassoon in Black Gospel Music, which includes collaborating with composers; Raymond Wise, Mark Lomax and William Menefield. She gives recitals and master classes around the U.S. each year, and has performed at the International Double Reed Society Conferences. Stone is the second bassoonist with the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra and second bassoonist with the Sphinx Symphony Orchestra in Detroit.

Currently, Stone is active as a freelance musician in the Nashville, TN region. She frequently performs with the Nashville alternative classical ensemble, Chatterbird. She has successfully taught a vast amount of double reed students since returning to Nashville in 2013, and her students have gone on to win Mid-State and All-State band competitions each year. Her students are also members of regional Youth Orchestras in the Nashville area. Dr. Stone chooses primarily to focus her teaching on the bassoon now. She is passionate about teaching and participating in the rise of musicianship and life skills in youth. Stone feels that starting new musicians and transitioning strong young instrumentalists to the bassoon is very important and fulfilling work.

Dr. Stone has held visiting professorships at the University of Missouri in Columbia, and Bowling Green State University in Ohio. She has held the position of Assistant Professor of Bassoon at Middle Tennessee State University, and in 2004, she held a visiting professorship in Double Reeds at Austin Peay State University. She is also a member of the Rushes Ensemble, which premiered and recorded Michael Gordon’s work for 7 bassoons. In 2012, the group toured Europe showcasing the piece, and continues with performances around the U.S. and abroad.

Dr. Stone received her D.M.A. in bassoon performance from the University of Texas at Austin in 2010, an M.M. in bassoon performance and woodwind specialty from Michigan State University in 2003, and a B.M. in music education from SUNY Potsdam in 2001.  Her teachers include Kristin Wolfe Jensen, Barrick Stees, and Frank Wangler.

Maya moved back to the South East in 2013, and is thrilled to be living here again. She loves the green, rolling hills, the mountains, and the crisp sun so prevalent in the region.
